Washington, DC – Shattering Glass and its affiliate, the National ERA Publication Task Force, today led 84 organizations and professional associations from across the country in calling on President Biden to instruct the US Archivist (“Archivist”) to publish the Equal Rights Amendment (“ERA”) as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

The ERA was originally introduced in Congress on December 10, 1923, passed overwhelming by Congress in 1972, and ratified and became the 28th Amendment on December 27, 2020. However, the ERA has yet to be included in the Constitution.

This letter is the most diverse push yet to pressure the President to ensure the Archivist performs her ministerial duty to print a revised Constitution that includes the ERA. The signatories include gender and racial justice organizations, democracy and voting focused organizations, medical and professional associations, faith leaders and more from across the country. This diversity reflects the urgent need for the ERA.

The ERA is the most powerful tool available to guarantee equality for all, stop the ever-increasing attacks on the rights of women, girls and LGBTQIA+ people, protect access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare, and preserve our democracy and credibility on the world stage.

Jeri Burton, Executive Director of Nevada NOW knows it is time to get it done. “Nevada activists were proud to work alongside Nevada leaders like Senator Pat Spearman to reenergize the Federal ERA when we ratified in 2017. President Biden, we need you to tell the Archivist to publish the ERA to complete the work of 100 years to include women in the Constitution.”

According to Eileen Murphy, MD, a leader of the National ERA Publication Task Force, “Human rights for each, and every human being is self-evident. President Biden, listen to the resounding chorus of international and national appeal to publish the duly ratified Equal Rights Amendment without delay. History awaits your courage.”

“We are at a critical juncture in the fight for gender equality as well as for our democracy. And we need the Equal Rights Amendment to meet the moment” said Nicole Vorrasi Bates, Executive Director of Shattering Glass and a founder and leader of the National ERA Publication Task Force. “If we don’t act now, we will continue to slide backwards, and it likely will take generations to recover. Women, girls, the LGBTQIA+ community, and our democracy simple cannot afford to wait. Lives are at stake. The time is now. And we need President Biden to take action. No more words.”

The full letter and a complete list of signatories may be found HERE.

Organizations interested in signing-on to the letter and/or the efforts ensure the ERA is published in our Constitution should contact our Executive Director, Nicole Vorrasi Bates, at nvbates@shatteringglass.org.
